Countless human desires drift through the city.
Some things—buildings or monuments—remain for decades or even centuries, while others, such as advertisements, disappear within days. Through wishes and desires, new things continually emerge as others fade away, whether they take physical form or not. The many thoughts that pass through people’s minds gradually settle into the city, remaining there as memories.
Walking through the city, I observe it almost like an archaeologist, tracing fragments of urban memory through signs, streets, and the traces of everyday life. At first glance, globalized cities may appear to form a homogeneous landscape. Yet when looked at more closely, they reveal diverse cultural expressions. There may be no single answer, but encountering human creativity and cultural diversity through observing cities can open new ways of seeing the world.
This series was photographed in Bangkok and Ayutthaya. The origins of the Thai nation can be traced to the Sukhothai Kingdom in the thirteenth century. It was followed by the Ayutthaya Kingdom—today known for its World Heritage ruins—then the short-lived Thonburi Kingdom, and finally the Chakri dynasty, which continues to the present.
Like life itself, the prosperity imagined by people never lasts forever. Yet through endings and transformations, cultures and histories continue. In July, with heat and humidity hanging in the air, I wandered through the city, quietly observing its landscapes.

都市には人々の無数の思いが漂っている。
建物やモニュメントのように何十年、何百年と残っているものもあれば広告のように数日で消えるものもある。願いや欲望によってかたちの有無に関係なく、新たに何かがうみ出され何かが失われていく。人々は様々な思いを巡らせ、そしてそれらは都市のあらゆる部分に記憶として宿っている。
ぼくは都市を歩き回り、まるで遺跡を前にした考古学者のように眺めて、人々の様子や暮らし、都市の痕跡や記憶から様々なことを想起する。グローバル化した都市は一見均質的な都市風景に見える。しかし一方で多様な文化の在り方を見せてくれる。確かな答えがあるわけではないが、都市を眺めることを通して人間の創造性や文化の多様性に触れることは、世界について新たな視点を持つことでもあるように感じる。
撮影の舞台はタイ、バンコクとアユタヤ。現在のタイ王国が国家として成立するのは13世紀スコータイ王朝からである。その後世界遺産としても有名なアユタヤ王朝に移り、トンブリー王朝を経て現在のチャクリー王朝に至る。
命と同じように人が思い描く繁栄は永遠には続かない。人の文化や歴史は何かが終わること、変わることによって、絶えず続いてきた。7月の湿気と熱気が漂う都市を僕は彷徨いながら、ただ静かに眺めていた。
